ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS

At Drs. Van Gyn and Staples and Associates, we are committed to investing in the latest technology that can improve a patients health, reduce chair time or increase comfort. We are proud to introduce our two latest acquisitions: Digital X-Rays and the VELSCOPE, an essential oral cancer screening tool.

Digital X-Rays are one of the most significant advancements in diagnostic technology.

  • Digital x-rays are FASTER AND SAFER than traditional film x-rays. It takes just a minute for the digital image to appear on the screen in the operatory. Patients are exposed to far less radiation.
  • The high resolution images can be ENLARGED and MANIPULATED allowing "suspect" areas to be studied. A large digital image also makes it easier for the doctor to explain and show the patients where the problem is and the recommended treatment. No more squinting at postage-size films.
  • Digital x-rays eliminate the need for film and developing chemicals making the process ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.
  • Digital x-rays IMPROVE CONTINUITY OF CARE as they can be easily retrieved and transmitted electronically to a specialist or another medical practitioner. Digital x-rays can also be helpful when explaining a treatment plan to an insurer or seeking reimbursement.

VELSCOPE - the newest tool in early oral cancer detection

Each year, more than 3,000 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer. Half will die within five years, and many others will be left badly disfigured. The survival rate for oral cancer is one of the lowest of all of the major cancers as it is typically diagnosed late, after it has begun to spread.

Historically, dentists have had to rely on a physical exam and simple visual inspection for oral cancer-until now. Academy Dental have chosen to invest in the newest detection tool available called the VELSCOPE which allows them to see what the naked eye cannot. The VELSCOPE is a special high-intensity light that improves the ability to identify suspicious areas at their earliest stages.

Normal healthy tissues in the mouth fluoresce under this light. Suspect tissue appears as dark shadows. The exam is simple and painless.

Studies have shown that prevention and early detection is key with battling oral cancer. Early detection allows the cancer to be removed before it spreads. Please join us in the fight against oral cancer. At your next appointment, ask your dentist about the VELSCOPE.
