During the procedure, Dr. Staples asks the patient to contract the facial muscles to determine where the first BOTOX® injection should be placed. She then uses a fine needle to inject small amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic into various facial muscles. BOTOX® injections block the chemical signals that allow muscles to contract. Because the inactive muscles cannot tighten, skin relaxes and smoothes out, resulting in the appearance of fewer lines and wrinkles. The treatment is relatively painless, so no anesthesia is usually needed. BOTOX® injection treatment typically lasts no longer than 30 minutes.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?

Yes! Botox has been thoroughly researched (more than 3,000 studies) and clinically used for over 20 years and is approved by both the HPB (Health Protection Branch of Canada) and the FDA. More than 13 million procedures have been performed since 2002.

Botox is a natural purified protein that is extracted from a bacteria and refined into a medicine (similar to how penicillin is made).

Botox is a medicine that has been safely used for many years in children as young as two years old to treat cerebral palsy. These kids get up to 6 TIMES an average cosmetic dose and receive this treatment every 3-4 months.

How long will a Botox treatment last?

The effects will gradually wear off after 3-4 months

What is the treatment experience like?

A treatment takes approximately 10-15 minutes. It can take up to 14 days to see the full results.

Does the injection hurt?

No, it feels like an insect bite. It's the same kind of needle that diabetics use.

What are the possible side effects?

Side effects are very rare and are not permanent. Possible side effect are tenderness at the injection site, small bruising, short term headaches, and ptosis. If any adverse events occur it will be in the first week and will usually go away in 7-10 days.

Is it safe to use Juvederm and Botox together?

Yes, they are terrific alone and even better together.

BOTOX® Therapeutic

Restylane®

BOTOX® Cosmetic is only one of many non-surgical facial treatments used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Our Academy Dental offices also offer dermal fillers such as Restylane®. Restylane® injections are derived from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found within the body that cushions and lubricates soft connective tissue and fills in the space between collagen and elastin fibers. Over time, the aging process and environmental factors deplete the amount of hyaluronic acid found within the body, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles on the surface of the skin. However, Restylane® works to counteract the effects of the environment and aging by adding volume and lift to targeted areas of the face.

The Restylane® Application Procedure

As with BOTOX® Cosmetic, Restylane® is injected in tiny amounts beneath the skin's surface with a very fine needle. Because Restylane® is a gel, it can be injected much more easily and with less pressure than other dermal injections, making treatment relatively pain-free. The result is youthful looking skin that feels completely natural. Treatment at our Victoria BC practice with Restylane® usually requires 30 minutes or less.

Benefits of Restylane®

Restylane® injections are a safe and effective way to achieve a more youthful appearance without surgery. Unlike BOTOX® Cosmetic and other dermal injections, Restylane® is made of a compound that occurs naturally within the body, which makes it a safe and effective alternative for patients with allergies to animal proteins. Treatment is also relatively quick and painless, and anesthesia is usually not necessary. Restylane® is longer lasting than traditional collagen treatments. Patients can enjoy the benefits of Restylane® for up to six months, twice as long as the effects of collagen injections. JUVEDERM™

Like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Restylane®, JUVEDERM™ is injected in small amounts using a very fine needle. Typical treatment lasts no more than 30 minutes. Because the injection is made of a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid than Restylane®, the results from JUVEDERM™ last longer.
